It's all in the (Print) Mix

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Print mixing is a bold and eclectic fashion statement, that I am very fond of. Scrolling my Instagram, it becomes obvious that I fully embrace the trend. Trend, though, isn't quite the right word. Print mixing, also known as pattern play, is a classic fashion practice that is not indicative of a particular style of fashion. Pattern mixing is seen in preppy outfits (www.jcrew.com) punk clothing (betseyjohnson.com) and casual/modern style (www.gap.com). Whatever your personal style, try "mixing things up" with a little pattern play.

Gingham, an iconic, checked pattern, is a go-to base print for me. Gingham comes in a wide range of bold and pastel colors. The print is often seen in light to medium, cotton button front shirts. They are perfect for layering under sweaters, dresses, t-shirts; or just about any article of clothing. Old Navy, J. Crew, Gap, and Belk are great places to find gingham button downs.

Polka dots and stripes, also, work as "neutrals" when print mixing. Look for thin stripes to go under a sweater with a large scale print, or a "base layer" with large polka dots to compliment a dress with a small, floral pattern.

It's important to balance the size and scale of your two (plus) prints. Oxford button downs with a thin stripe beautifully compliment large, bold prints that carry a vast amount of open space. Principal articles of clothing (or your focal piece) with compact, small scale designs; are balanced nicely over a large pattern in a complimentary color. Use the base layer print to pull out a secondary color in your top layer.

Print mixing does not mean the patterns need to be layered either. I, often, pair polka dot pants with a classic fair isle sweater; or busy Lilly Pulitzer shorts with a light gingham top. Feeling exceedingly brave? Go for three prints. Try a polka dot shirt under a striped sweater and finish your look with floral shoes. What kind of combos can you come up with?! I'd love to know!
